Background

Post Up was founded in 2023 by Jeremy Bircher, a post-production veteran with more than two decades of industry experience. After twenty years inside the industry’s workflows, Jeremy had seen firsthand how much time and money is lost to fragmented tools, manual handoffs, and physical media. He built Post Up to fix it.

Post Up is an AI orchestration and metadata infrastructure platform for film and television post-production. A single metadata record is written at ingest and carried through every stage of post – dailies, editorial, color, VFX, and final delivery – allowing the platform to automate the pipeline end to end for studio and streamer clients. Supporting roughly 32 productions per year and approximately 1.6PB of new data annually, Post Up replaces the industry’s reliance on portable hard drives with centralized, cloud-enabled infrastructure.

The problem Post Up solves is easy to picture: for decades, post-production companies have physically shipped hard drives to move valuable content between vendors. Jeremy recalls once personally escorting a drive on a flight to guarantee its safe delivery. Post Up eliminates physical media entirely and enables remote-first, automated workflows in which every stage of post-production reads from and writes to the same metadata record.

The Challenge

Post-production generates data at a staggering rate. Raw camera files can weigh in at a gigabyte every few seconds. A popular reality series can accumulate petabytes within months, and large-scale features generate dozens of terabytes per day. Any platform that promises to automate this pipeline needs storage infrastructure that can keep pace.

Capacity alone was never the hard part. The real challenge is access. Editors, colorists, VFX artists, and producers all generate and consume enormous volumes of media, and uniting them around a single, fast source of truth is what makes remote and automated workflows possible. Traditional approaches to managing this data are cumbersome and inefficient, which is exactly why the industry has been slow to modernize.

Jeremy puts the state of the industry plainly:

" If I told you to close your eyes and imagine a film studio, you’d probably see a big room with people running around with huge machines and computers. Every industry that operated like that in the past has now undergone a revolution, but that hasn’t happened in filmmaking yet."

That is the gap Post Up set out to close, and closing it demanded storage that could deliver efficiency, speed, and reliability at film-industry scale. Before finding Quobyte, Post Up’s engineering team worked through a series of storage solutions in search of one that could.

The Solution

Post Up’s engineering team evaluated several storage systems before choosing Quobyte. The goal was to reproduce the low latency of block storage, which the team had previously achieved with a Mac server over fiber channel, in a scalable environment built on object storage. Some of the candidates would have cost millions of dollars. Only Quobyte proved viable.

What set Quobyte apart was a cost-effective file system that works natively, delivering low latency, redundancy, speed, and centralized management. That mattered because an orchestration layer that automates dailies processing, QC, and delivery is only as fast as the storage underneath it. Quobyte’s distributed file system now underpins Post Up’s owned infrastructure.

The difference showed up immediately in daily work. With the previous storage solution, TrueNAS, some applications could not access storage directly, forcing the team to copy massive files to local drives just to run a program. With Quobyte, those same applications run over the network without workarounds.

Implementation was smooth. The documentation was complete and clear enough that outside help was rarely needed, and when questions did come up, Quobyte’s ticketing system and support team were responsive and ready to help – a stark contrast to the team’s experience with the other solutions they evaluated.

The Result

Since integrating Quobyte, Post Up runs every machine against a single centralized storage platform. There is no longer any need to segment data by processing or bandwidth requirements, as the previous system demanded.

"Quobyte changed how we operate. Every workstation works from one centralized storage platform, so we no longer segment data by processing needs the way we did with TrueNAS. When we need more performance, we add servers. We got there on our existing hardware at a fraction of the cost of the alternatives, and everything we run on top of it, from dailies through final delivery, moves dramatically faster. Our clients see that speed in how quickly finished files land."
