Format Devices and Create Your First Volume

In this quick tutorial, you will learn the first steps to get started with a new Quobyte cluster. Once you have your new Quobyte cluster up and running, the first thing you need to do to get started is format your devices.

1

To format your devices, click on the Devices tab in the left hand side panel.

  • You will see that 4 devices are being used as registries.

  • The other devices will be used as data storage devices or metadata devices.
  • To format your devices select the “click to format all unformatted devices.”

  • The previous step will open a menu where you can select the device type. You can leave everything as is and select “Start Task.”

Now, your devices are being formatted.

2

To see your tasks in progress, head over to the Tasks page:

  • You will see that there are 4 tasks running and the other 4 are queued.

  • Give it some time, and you will notice that once the running tasks are finished, they will be marked as completed, and the queued tasks will start running.

3

Once all tasks have finished, go back to the Devices page. You will now see all your devices formatted.

  • Some of them are labeled with a “D” for Data, and others as “M” for metadata, and the third as "R", for registries.
  • You can group your devices by servers:

  • You will see that every server has its own Registry, Metadata, and Data services.

Now you are ready to create your first volume. To do so, click on the “Volumes” tab in the left hand side panel:

  • Now, click on the “Volume” dropdown menu, and select “Create volume…”

  • Next, name your volume, and add a policy, and choose “3” for the replication factor, and then click on the “Create” button:

Now, your brand new volume is ready to be used.
